Overview

What Is the Cédula de Extranjería?

The Cédula de Extranjería is Colombia's official identification card for foreigners. Issued by Migración Colombia, it serves as your legal proof of identity and immigration status — the equivalent of a national ID card for Colombian citizens.

It's a laser-engraved, polymer card built to ICAO Document 9303 standards (the same as international passports), with biometric data integration. There is no digital version — you must carry the physical card.

Once you have your Cédula, you'll use it for almost everything in daily life: banking, renting an apartment, signing contracts, getting a phone plan, accessing healthcare, and more. Without it, life in Colombia is significantly more complicated.

The Process

How to Apply — Step by Step

Follow these steps in order. The process takes place entirely in Colombia and must be done in person at a Migración Colombia office.

1

Get Your Colombian Visa Approved

You need a valid Colombian visa as the prerequisite. Apply through the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores (Cancillería) online portal. The Cédula cannot be obtained without an approved visa.

Via: cancilleria.gov.co
2

Get Your Blood Type Tested (First-Timers Only)

If this is your first Cédula de Extranjería, you need an official document confirming your blood type. Any clinic or lab in Colombia provides this quickly — simply walk in and ask for a "prueba de tipo sanguíneo para cédula de extranjería." Cost is approximately 35,000–50,000 COP (~$10 USD). If you've had a previous Colombian Cédula, skip this — they already have it on record.

First-time applicants only
3

Complete the FUT Form Online

Fill out the Single Procedure Form (Formulario Único de Trámites — FUT) on the official Migración Colombia website. You'll need to upload your visa approval and passport data page as a single PDF. After submitting, save your FUT number — you'll need it at your appointment.

4

Schedule Your Appointment

Book your in-person appointment at any Migración Colombia office through their online portal. Select the "Cédula de Extranjería" option. Appointments book out quickly — plan ahead. You can attend any office in Colombia, but your Cédula will only be available for pickup at the office where you applied.

⏰ Must book within 15 days of visa issuance
5

Attend Your Appointment In Person

Arrive with all documents (see checklist below). An immigration agent will review your papers, take your fingerprints, photograph you digitally, and record your signature. This biometric data becomes embedded in your Cédula. No one else can complete this step on your behalf — it must be you in person.

In-person · Bring all original documents
6

Pay the Fee

The 2026 fee is 294,000 COP (approximately $79 USD). Pay by credit or debit card at the Migración office — they do not accept cash. Keep your payment receipt.

Wait & Pick Up Your Cédula

Official processing time is approximately 10 business days. However, delays are common — in some cities it can take 3 to 4 months due to backlogs. Check your status online at the Migración Colombia website using your FUT number. Pick up your Cédula at the same office where you applied — it cannot be transferred to another city's office.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Any foreign national holding a valid Colombian visa valid for more than 3 months must obtain a Cédula de Extranjería. This includes digital nomad visa holders, work visa holders, retirement (pensionado) visa holders, investor visa holders, student visa holders, and resident visa holders. Minors over 7 years old who are visa beneficiaries are also required to have one.
You have 15 calendar days from the date your visa is issued to register it with Migración Colombia and apply for your Cédula. If you obtained your visa at a Colombian consulate abroad, the 15-day clock starts from the day you arrive in Colombia — not the day the visa was issued. Missing this deadline can result in fines of up to 7 times the minimum monthly salary, which is a significant amount. Do not delay.
The official government fee per Resolution 0599 of 2026 is 294,000 COP — approximately $79 USD at a reference exchange rate of 3,750 COP/USD. Payment is made by credit or debit card at the Migración Colombia office. Cash is not accepted. Additionally, first-time applicants will need to pay for a blood type test at a clinic (approximately 35,000–50,000 COP).
The official processing time is approximately 10 business days after your appointment. However, delays are very common — in some cities the wait can stretch to 3 or even 4 months due to backlogs at Migración Colombia and the national printing office. You can monitor your status online using your FUT number at the Migración Colombia website.
Yes. Once you've completed your appointment and paid, Migración Colombia provides a receipt or confirmation document that proves you've applied. Many banks, landlords, and employers in Colombia will accept this proof-of-application document while your physical Cédula is being processed. Your visa in your passport remains valid proof of your legal status in the meantime.
Technically, Migración officials can sometimes arrange to transfer a Cédula between offices, but this is strongly not recommended. Immigration lawyers report cases of Cédulas being lost or significantly delayed in transit. You should plan to apply and pick up at the same Migración Colombia office. Choose the office in the city where you'll be based.
