Cédula de extranjería for children and new adults

Age-based rules are different for ages 0–6, 7–17 and the transition to adulthood.

Last reviewed: October 29, 2026

Ages zero through six

For children aged zero through six who hold qualifying visas, the government indicates registration of the visa only; they do not receive a physical cédula de extranjería.

Ages seven through seventeen

Eligible minors from age seven generally need a cédula. At the appointment they must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, with documentary proof of the relationship or legal representation.

Turning eighteen

Migración Colombia says holders turning eighteen must apply for a new cédula de extranjería within fifteen calendar days after their eighteenth birthday. Check appointment availability and required records in advance.
